The
town of Zionsville, Northeast of Indianapolis, had researched this project
for over ten years with the help of HNTB Architects and Engineers. The issue
of salvaging the existing pavers for Historical Preservation purposes was
strongly supported by the citizens of this town. The reality was that there
were not enough pavers anywhere in the United States to match the existing
pavers that were over ninety years old to allow for a total reconstruction
of similar pavers. Thus the agonizing delay in rehabilitating this street
as there appeared no solution that would satisfy all interested parties.
A
viable solution was finally agreed to that would allow the center area to
be substituted with a similar but different clay paver that was a tumbled
product from Ragland clay manufacturers. This lane would represent the track
area for the old interurban train that serviced this town with Indianapolis
at the turn of the century.
In
addition, the city required metal cleats to be installed within the paver
system for anchoring the supports for tent construction to accommodate festivals
held in the street areas.
Decorative
Paving played an integral part in this entire process as a hardscape contractor
that could interface with the city, engineers and manufacturer to coordinate
the construction of a modular paving system that will last for another hundred
years.
